Tabriz National History Museum, a collection of biodiversity

There is a mysterious nature around us that each part of it excites curiosity in man. Everyone at any age want to get information about nature. Animals and plants are among the most important components of nature, and natural history is a scientific method of studding them. But all of us don’t have the ability to study the animals and plants. Therefore, museums in the name of natural history have been established in different cities of the world, in order to get information about the history of nature and world for visitors. The city of Tabriz is no exception and has a Natural History Museum.

Tabriz National History Museum is one of the most important museums in the city, which was established in 1993 by the Environmental Organization of East Azerbaijan Province. The museum is also known as the Wildlife Museum, and with a total area of 200 square meters, is considered to be the largest and most complete National History Museum in Iran and the northwest of the country.

A collection of various animals and plants include 38 species of mammals, 49 bird species, 13 reptile species, 9 aquatic species, two types of fossils and samples of Crustaceans and arthropods are waiting for the visitors in museum. Perhaps the most fascinating part of the museum is the maquettes of dinosaurs of the second period of geology. In the other three stands, we can see the diversity of animal life on the Iranian plateau. These three stands include aquatic birds like Demoiselle Crane, Flamingo, White-headed duck, Ruddy Shelduck, Northern pintail, Great white pelican and Whooper swan that are from the East Azerbaijan aquatic habitats and other parts of Iran.

Among the other interesting parts of the museum is the part of Landfowls, which includes Partridge, Grey Partridge, Asian francolins, and the rare species of Arasbaran pheasant. It can be said that the Caucasian grouse is one of the unique species in the region, but unfortunately there is only a picture of that. We can also see various predatory birds such Saker falcon, Northern goshawk, Golden eagle, Barbary falcon and various Owls.

Watching the brown bear, Badger, Fox, Wolf, Jackal, Hyena, and all kinds of Wildcats like Jungle cat and Caracal is another exciting part of the museum. Among all these, there are samples of large mammals such as Alborz Red mouflon, Urial, Armenian mouflon, bezoar ibex and Red deer.

Other species in the Tabriz Natural History Museum are the half body or neck and head taxidermy of non-native kind of Coypu, Moose (the largest and heaviest extant species in the Deer family), Reindeer, Chamois, Marco Polo sheep, Snow sheep, Barbary Sheep, African lion, zebra and Gnu, as well as snakes and other reptiles of the country including Desert monitor, Caucasian agama, Vipera ursinii, zigzag mountain viper and Macrovipera lebetina.

It is possible for nature and wildlife enthusiasts to see all of these various animals in the Tabriz Natural History Museum located at the Environmental Organization of East Azerbaijan Province, Azadi Boulevard. So, consider visiting this museum when planning your trip to Tabriz.
