Azerbaijan Museum, An attraction built on the historical layers of Tabriz city

Azerbaijan Museum, built on the historical layers of Tabriz city, is the second most important museum in Iran after the National Museum of Tehran. Azerbaijan museum is located next to the historic cemetery site dating back over 3000 years. It is worthwhile to mention that the museum is located beside the famous Kabud Mosque. The plan of Azerbaijan Museum is inspired by the architecture of Azerbaijan and designed by André Godard, a French archeologist.

The objects of this museum belong to the pre-Islamic and Islamic period. The building has 3 floors. On the ground floor, you can see the pre-Islamic and Islamic period. The Bismillāh stone and the famous skulls of man and woman that belong to the Stone Age are also kept on this floor.

On the first floor of Azerbaijan Museum, the oldest objects date back to the 4th century. On the first floor, there are also coins and seals in the hall, which is the treasure of coins from the Achaemenid period to the Qajar period.

The newest part of the Azerbaijan Museum is the ancient stone sculptures that date back to different historical periods. In this section, tombstones from the Islamic period have been exhibited. It should be noted that by the year 2018, there were statues made by Ahad Hosseini. The statues were now transferred to a building near the Maqbarat-O-Shoara. There are also stone rams, stone statues, human statues and samples of inscribed stones on this part of the museum.

The following are some of the most important objects of this museum:

  • A rare coin of Naderi period called the world’s largest coin.
  • Bismillāh stone made by Mohammad Ali Ghouchani in Nastaliq script, which is unique in its kind. The stone has five parts; four parts of it are the frame and the remain is text.
  • The skulls of man and woman dating back to 3,000 years ago, discovered around the Kabud Mosque.
  • The statue of Female Goddess that was discovered in Rostamabad, Gilan province, and shows the importance and value of woman in ancient Persia.
  • The hat of Urartu which is unique in its own kind.
